Shutter Notes: Terry Tinkess — Blue Crystal

October 16, 2022

Welcome to Shutter Notes, our weekly community feature. Shutter Notes gives you the chance to get to know our community members a bit better. Each member will share a little bit about themselves and their chosen image.

Terry Tinkess is an Accredited photographer through the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) as well as a Certified Professional Photographer through the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has had a camera in my hands for most of his adult life but became serious about it in 2007. Living in rural Ontario, he is willing to tackle just about anything but especially enjoys getting out early and seeing what the natural world has to offer.

Why and how Terry created this image

Along the shores of the St. Lawrence River near Ingleside, Ontario Canada, this is what happens when the Ice Queen waves her wand on an early winter morning and the world turns into a blue crystal fantasy.

Terry liked this image from the moment he saw it on the back of my camera and he thought others might enjoy it as well.

Terry doesn’t spend a lot of time on post-processing. Usually, what might be considered typical darkroom work, adjusting exposure, highlights and shadows. He adjusted the white balance slightly as well, to increase the coolness of the image.

He likes to think that photography is the practice of not only seeing what is in front of you but imagining, with a bit of creative thinking what could be there as well. And, that learning to look at your work with an open mind will enable you often to see much more than you expected.
