To become a competent photographer is, as you well know, no mean feat. To become the kind of photographer that makes photographs that are uniquely your own is even more challenging. Both journeys are intertwined and—lucky for we who love that adventure—lifelong. Since January, I’ve been working on something for you that will help bring those two roads together. It’s called The Photographer’s Voice and this morning I invite you to watch the first episode, totally free.
Episode One of The Photographer’s Voice will take 20 minutes to watch—just enough for a cup of coffee. It’s part of a larger project and a bigger idea: how can we shoot, select, and stylize photographs, specifically in series or bodies of work, that are truly “us”? How can we make images that say something and say it in our own unique way?
Over the last few weeks, I’ve asked this question: how do we learn to shoot like ourselves? If no one alive is “you-er than you,” as The Cat in The Hat reminded us, then how do we make photographs that reflect that uniqueness? The Photographer’s Voice is a 10-episode video exploration of that question, and includes three webinar-style Zoom calls with me to go deeper and ask me anything.
I’m keeping this email short because I want you to have the time to watch the first episode of this new series, and more words are only going to slow you down. When you click the link to watch the video, it’ll take you to a page with all the details for those of you who want to go deeper with these important ideas.
The big mistake in photography is believing you have to become “good” (whatever that means) before you begin to explore the ideas and techniques that give you your photographic voice when it’s those latter concepts and tools that are what make you better, stronger, and more “you” with the camera and in your photographs themselves.
Take a moment today to watch episode one of The Photographer’s Voice.
I hope you’ll join me for this next adventure.
For the Love of the Photograph,
David
